SLPA Gets Jump Start On 4th Of July Festivities

November 22, 2014

(Orleans)—The Spirit Lake Protective Association is getting a jump-start on the 4th of July festivities. SLPA spokesman Scott Ziegler says they kicked things off earlier today (Wed.) with a pancake feed at the newly revamped shelter facility at Mini Wakan State Park on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake. That event continues until 1:00 this (Wed.) afternoon. He says the proceeds from the event go to support various projects the organization puts on each year, such as the recent renovation of the Mini Wakan shelter house…(click here for comment.)  “We were very instrumental in redoing the Miniwakan shelter up here. If you haven’t seen that come up and take a look at that. It’s incredible. We put in the dock at the pump house, that big beautiful dock at the pump house, we put a dock in at Mini Wakan, we’re also very big into the invasive aquatic species…the mussels, the milfoil. I mean we want to keep this stuff out of our lake. We want to keep this lake as prestine as it has been. Spirit Lake Protective Association is very big into the protection of our lake, to keep it clean and keep it fun.”

Ziegler says the pancake feed is just the beginning of the festivities…(click here for comment.) “And then at 5:00 we have our second annual boat parade, and since it’s a south wind we’re going to start that with Kuhlman’s barge with the great big flag at the pump house. We’re going to have a boat parade, so decorate your boat up. We’re going to have a judge for the most original, the best and of course the tackiest boat decorated. So get out on your docks. We’re going to have some jet skis throwing out some gifts, some prizes and different things that local businesses have donated; it should be a great time. Last year, our first time, we had a great turnout. So this year we hope it’s bigger and better. It’s a beautiful day today out here on the lake. And then at 10:00 p.m. (this evening Wed. 7/3)  of course we have the fireworks.”

This (Wed.) evening’s fireworks over Big Spirit Lake will be accompanied by patriotic music on our brother station, KUQQ.
