(Spirit Lake)– Some Spirit Lake High School students will spend the upcoming weekend helping folks in eastern Iowa who are still recovering from last summer’s flooding and tornadoes.
Tyler Gustafson of the Spirit Lake High School Student Advisory Council, or SAC, says their mission has been dubbed “Mission F5: Keeping Hope Alive”.
Gustafson says about 70 Spirit Lake High School students will participating.
To give students an example of what it’s like to sacrifice something like the people in eastern Iowa had to, Gustafson says the students will be giving up something that’s near and dear to them over the weekend–their cell phones. They will be able to bring I-pods with them, however.
Sara Webb, another member of the Spirit Lake High School Student Advisory Council, says they got the idea for the trip from an advisor who had recently been in eastern Iowa. Webb says they’re hoping they’ll be able to go on other, similar trips in the future. She feels it will be a valuable experience for students.
This weekend’s trip isn’t just limited to students. Adults from throughout the community are also invited to participate.
The delegation will depart Spirit Lake High School at 6:00 a.m. Saturday and will return by 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
They’ll be staying overnight at churches in the Parkersburg area.
