SL Woman Escapes Serious Injury In Single Vehicle Crash That Results In Considerable Property Damage

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake woman escaped serious injury in a single-vehicle crash early this (Tues.) afternoon that resulted in a considerable amount of property damage.

Spirit Lake police say 31-year-old Jennifer Nielsen of Spirit Lake was driving a 2002 Dodge northbound on Highway 71 and had just passed 34th Street when she apparently blacked out, causing her to lose control. The vehicle traveled through the median into oncoming traffic and went into the west ditch where it collided with a sign and a utility box before coming to rest. Both driver’s and passenger sides airbags deployed.

Nielsen declined immediate treatment.

$8,000 in damage was estimated to the vehicle. Damage to the Cenla Campground sign, owned by Craig Smith, was put at $5,000 and the utility box, owned by Mediacom, sustained an estimated $200 in damage.

The crash took place shortly after 1:00 p.m.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was also called to the scene to clean up some fluid leaking from the vehicle.
