November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A traffic stop early Sunday in Spirit Lake resulted in drug and alcohol charges against two teens.

Spirit Lake police say an officer pulled over a vehicle shortly before 1:00 a.m. in the area of Gary Avenue and Lake Street for a traffic violation.

Upon investigating, police say they determined the driver, 18-year-old Ross Vanderlaan of Spirit Lake, was allegedly intoxicated.

A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up alcohol along with what’s alleged to be marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Vanderlaan was charged with operating while intoxicated…first offense; possession of a controlled substance…marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of alcohol under the legal age.

A passenger, a 17-year-old female juvenile, was charged with possession of alcohol under the legal age. She was released to the custody of her mother.

Police say the case remains under investigation and that more arrests may be made.
