SL Schools Receive Special Recognition From EPA For Green Energy

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake Community School District is getting some national recognition for its use of green power.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today (Monday) that the Spirit Lake Community School District is listed among the agency’s top 20 K-12 schools list of the largest green power purchasers among all primary and secondary schools in the country.

The Spirit Lake Community School District is number nine on the list, a quarterly ranking by the EPA’s Green Power Partnership.

Chris Whitley of the EPA oversees the program. He tells KUOO news the school district’s annual on-site power generation of nearly two million kilowatt-hours is equivalent to avoiding the carbond dioxide emissions of more than 200 passenger vehicles per year, or the rough equivalent of the annual electrical needs of more than 100 average american homes.

Whitley says the Green Power Partnership works with more than 1,100 partner organizations to encourage they voluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use. The partners include a wide variety of leading organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, small and medium size businesses; local, state and federal governments and colleges and universities.

Whitley says they hope the program will serve as an incentive to get more on board with renewable energy.
