(Spirit Lake)– Whether or not a new city hall will be constructed in Spirit Lake now rests with the city’s voters.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to place a bond issue on the project before the voters in the November General Election. The referendum will be in the amount of $1,745,000.
City Administrator Mark Stevens told the council the total estimated cost of the project has been revised to 1.95 million dollars to include demolition costs. As a result, Stevens says the city will increase its contribution from cash reserves to $354,000. That way, he says the referendum will remain at 50-cent per thousand dollars of valuation.
The council decided earlier this month to drop the police station renovation from the project in order to lower the amount of the referendum. It was the concensus of the council that the police station project could be carried out later in the future and could be done in stages so as to avoid asking the public to pass another referendum.
