(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday reviewed language to be included in a revised ordinance that gives the city exclusive authority to be in the business of solid waste collection within city limits.
It also gives the city exclusive rights to provide dumpsters to residents and businesses. No outside companies are allowed to do that.
The city council several years ago adopted an ordinance with that language in it, but City Attorney Earl Maahs told the council Tuesday the verbage some how got dropped when the city’s ordinances were recently recodified.
But one council member wants to make sure the city isn’t taking advantage of having a monopoly in the garbage business. Jerry Harbst told fellow council members he wants to make sure the city is being fair in what it charges.
