(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday evening took no action on the city hall and police station project.
City Administrator Mark Stevens told the council the city would be looking at a bond issue probably in the vicinity of three million dollars to cover the cost of building a new city hall, renovating the existing police station, and to cover the cost to temporarily relocate city offices while construction is underway.
While the council must still decide on the exact amount of a bond issue, it must also decide on a date for an election on the measure. Stevens said in order to meet various deadline requirements, the earliest a vote could be held is this coming August. But councilman Jeff Thee said he’s concerned that may not be enough time to adequately educate the public on the issue. He also said the council will likely need more time to do its diligence, saying they may be able to tweak the plans further. He suggested the possibility of incorporating the vote with the November General Election.
Meanwhile, one councilman, Jerry Harbst, isn’t sure how he feels about keeping the police station separate from city hall. He says he wants to hear more from constituents about that.
