SL Council Reviews Preliminary Plans For New City Hall

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday reviewed tentative plans for a new city hall that would be built on the site of the existing facility.

Gayle Mack, a Project Manager with the architectural division of the Short, Elliott, Henricksen engineering firm of Minneapolis, presented preliminary architectural schematics with two different options. One included city and auxiliary offices along with the Police Department. That option, which would consist of a two-story building with a basement, has an estimated cost of 2.96 million dollars. The other option, with just city and auxiliary offices, would consist of a single-story building with basement. It has an estimated cost of 1.54 million.

The council took no action Tuesday as to which option to pursue. Council members directed Mack to conduct a structural analysis of the building that currently houses the Police Department and to come up with cost estimates for a rennovation of that facility.

City officials say the existing city hall has outlived its usefulness and has become crowded. A leaky roof has resulted in some structural issues and mold is said to be present in the basement and other parts of the building.
