SL Council Hears Updates On Hockey Arena, Memorial Park And City Hall Projects

(Spirit Lake)– Plans to build an indoor hockey arena near the Bedell Family YMCA are on a fast track now that funds have been raised for the building shell itself. That word from Brian Hines of the Lakes Area Youth Hockey Association who told the Spirit Lake city council Tuesday evening they’re still raising funds for refrigeration equipment. Hines Tuesday evening requested the city extend water and sanitary sewer service to the building site just northwest of the Y. The council referred the matter to the city’s Utility Committee for a recommendation.

In other business, the council was updated on the Memorial Park Project. Council members learned that if things go accordingly, construction could start in mid to late summer. The council originally planned to do the project in phases. But after learning that only another $50,000 or so will be needed to complete the entire project this year, they seemed interested in maybe re-visiting that aspect of it. Councilman Clyde Ihrke…

The city had initially budgeted $500,000 for the project this year. The council directed city staff to come back with firm costs before taking any action. It was reported that fundraising by the Kiwanis for the splash pad is continuing at a good pace and that some who have been contacted have expressed an interest in making in-kind contributions to the Memorial Park project itself.

On another issue, the council also reviewed revised plans for the city hall project. City Administrator Mark Stevens reported these plans were scaled back considerably from that which was defeated by voters in a referendum last November…Click here for comment from Mark Stevens

The newly revised facility has an estimated cost of slightly more than $1.5 million and would be about 11,028 square foot in size with both a basement and main level. The council directed city staff to further review the proposed plans to make sure sizes of the office spaces are adequate.
