SL Council Hears Request For Discounted Water; Discusses Downtown Parking Lots

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday took no action on a request from the Lakes Area Community Gardens for discounted water service. Councilman Clyde Ihrke expressed concern over setting a precedence if the council was to approve such a request…(click here for comment.) “There’s other charitable, non-profit organizations out there that I don’t want to set a precedence for by giving specific use money for something, which is what this would be. They’re asking for the use of water. I’m all in favor of trying to help them out some how but I think what we’ve got to do is look at the appointment of a non-profit organization during budget time like we usually do and give them so much money when they send in their letter of request.”

There was also discussion about parking in the downtown area and in city-owned municipal lots. In particular, City Administrator Mark Stevens expressed concern over usage of a lot at the corner of Lake Street and Ithaca Avenue in which the city leases spaces…(click here for comment.) “There’s vehicles there that have flat tires, are unused, that sit there without moving for months if not years. I don’t think that’s the intent of this council or the previous councils that set up this process that that’s not just the long term storage of abandoned vehicles.”

The council directed Stevens to draw up a policy for the lot and agreed to look into the possibility of increasing the rental fee for the spaces in the lot.
