SL Council Hears Plans For Peoria Ave Reconstruction

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday voted to proceed in a joint project with Dickinson county to rebuild Peoria Avenue…but there’s a condition.

Several council members expressed concern over a lack of proper documentations and agreements the city had in the past with the county pertaining to the road.

Councilman Kevin Bice brought up the concern, saying more time should be taken as they were just now learning about the project. He said he was also concerned over a lack of documentation the city had in previous agreements with the county over past projects dealing with the road.

But County Engineer Dan Eckert said he’s facing a deadline to get the plans submitted to the state.

After further discussion, councilman Steve Balm, who’s also a member of the city’s Street Committee, said the city could sign off on the plans contingent upon approval by city staff.

The state will hold a bidletting on the project since it’s being partially funded by federal money. In the event the city doesn’t like the plans, Eckert said they could be pulled prior to the letting in December. He says revised plans could be re-submitted for the next bidletting…believed to be in January.

Construction on the 1.8 million dollar project is slated for completion in late 2009.

The vote to proceed with the plans was three-to-two with councilmembers Bice and Jerry Harbst voting no.
