SL Council Awards Bid On 11th Street Project

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday awarded a bid on the 11th Street reconstruction project.

The action followed a public hearing on the issue that drew no written or oral comments.

The low bid of 68,896-dollars was submitted by Cedar Valley Construction of Cedar Rapids. It came in over the engineer’s estimate of 59,162-dollars. Only two bids were received on the project. The other was slightly more than 69-thousand dollars.

Engineer Brad Beck told the council the cost of the project could be brought back down below the estimate if the environmental components of it were removed. They were included because 11th Street is a dead-end street that experiences a problem with water running off the end of it, going directly into East Lake Okoboji.

Beck added another reason for the higher than expected bid is the ongoing escalation of construction costs.

Funding for the project will come through the 41-thousand dollars the city will receive through the state’s I-JOBS program as well as through a carryover in Road Use Tax money.
