SL Council Approves Rezoning; Awards Bid On Street Projects; Authorizes Hiring To Fill Vacancy

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday evening approved a request from Lakes Regional Healthcare to rezone some land near the hospital on Zenith Avenue from single family residential to highway commercial.

The action followed a public hearing that drew no comment.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended the council approve the rezoning.

The hospital plans to purchase a home that’s on one of the lots, which would eventually be used to expand parking.

The council also approved the first reading of an ordinance to vacate a portion of 21st street and an alley that runs through land where the school’s former administrative office is located. That action also followed a public hearing that drew no comment.

The council deferred a vote on the execution of a quit claim deed on that matter to its next meeting as some details on that still need to be worked out.

The council also awarded the low bid of $73,193 from Beck Excavating of Spirit Lake for the 2011 Street Improvement Project. It will consist of repairing portions of 22nd Street near Bomgaars and Circle Drive near Subway.

The bid came in below the engineer’s estimate of $80,000.

And with little discussion, the council voted unanimously to authorize City Administrator Mark Stevens to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Street Department.
