(Spirit Lake)—Area businesses are being reminded of the importance of shredding confidential or sensitive documents before disposing of them. Blaine Andera of the Spirit Lake Chamber of Commerce tells KUOO news a report his office received this morning from a business in town is case in point…(click here for comment.)
“We had a phone call here at the chamber this morning from a business in town that their trash bags had been gone through by an individual or individuals looking for financial papers and stuff like that. So we just wanted to reach out to all our chamber members and encourage them to shred all their documents. What a great reminder of the Kiwanis paper trailer at the Public Works Building. All of those documents that you shred can be recycled. So we encourage people to do that. It’s so important. Anything that’s got financial information on it or personal information on it to go ahead and shred that. It’s just important.”
Andera says not only is it important to keep sensitive information about your business from falling into the wrong hands, but it will also help protect your customers.
At this point officials aren’t sure if any personal information was compromised. They say it involved a financial institution and that it appears the incident had been going on over the past several weeks.
