Sioux County Collision Claims Life Of A Teen; Seriously Injures Another

September 10, 2025

(Sioux Center)– A collision Tuesday at the north junction of Highways 18 and 75 in Sioux county claimed the life of one teen and seriously injured another.

The Iowa State Patrol says 53-year-old Michael Bembenek of Rosholt, Wisconsin, was driving a 2009 Peterbilt semi and had stopped facing east on Highway 18. Troopers say a 17-year-old juvenile, who’s name hasn’t been released, was driving a 2007 Cadillac Escalade northbound on Highway 75. An accident report says the Escalade pulled into the path of the semi and the two collided.

The 17-year-old driver of the Escalade died in the crash; a 17-year-old passenger in the same vehicle was seriously injured and was taken by ambulance to the Sioux Center Hospital and was transferred by air to a Sioux Falls hospital. Bembenek wasn’t injured.

The collision took place shortly after 2:30 pm.
