(Sioux City)– A Sibley man has been sentenced in U.S. District Court on a child sexual exploitation charge.
40-year-old Michael Mayer was sentenced Monday to 15 years in federal prison after a jury in October of last year found him guilty of one count of producing child pornography. A week before the trial, Mayer pled guilty to receiving child pornography and possessing child pornography.
Evidence presented at the trial showed that between May and August of 2008 Mayer communicated online, through phone calls and text messages with a 14-year-old girl, and they sent each other sexually explicit pictures and videos of themselves. The images were later found on Mayer’s computer.
In addition to the prison term, Mayer must also serve a five-year term of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.
Mayer is being held in the custody of a U.S. Marshal pending transport to a federal prison.
The case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Osceola and Sioux County Sheriff’s Offices.
