Sheldon Officials Trying To Determine Cause Of Tree Dump Fire

February 10, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Sheldon)– Officials in Sheldon are trying to figure out the cause of a fire recently at the city’s tree dump. Public Works Director Todd Uhl says the Sheldon, Ashton and Sanborn Fire Departments responded to put it out, which he says was a time consuming process…

“We had to bring in excavators to dig through the pile and try to split up and save as much of it as we good because if you just let that whole thing burn rampant you’ve got a mess. It’s a big pile right now. It’s scheduled to be ground here in the next few weeks.”

Uhl says it took about four and-a-half hours to put the fire out.

Uhl says the trees disposed at the site typically are NOT burned. Instead, he says they are ground up. The chips are then shipped to an ethanol plant in South Dakota.
