Severe Weather Awareness Week Continues In Iowa With Damaging Wind & Hail As Thursday’s Theme

March 26, 2026

(Undated) (KIWA)– Severe Weather Awareness Week continues in Iowa with today’s (Thurs.) focus on damaging wind and hail. Warning Coordination Meteorologist Peter Rogers from the Sioux Falls office, has some advice about staying safe…

“This really comes down to severe thunderstorm warnings. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when we’re expecting hail one inch in diameter or larger or winds gusting to 58 mph or higher. Certainly the bigger the hail and the stronger the wind the potential larger the impact will be to the area, but similar to tornado safety you need to be seeking shelter in a sturdy building as quickly as possible and certainly getting away from any windows as they are prone to breakage with large hail and strong wind.”

A severe thunderstorm warning means either a severe thunderstorm is occurring, is detected by National Weather Service Doppler Radar, or a reliable report has been received. People in the WARNING area should take immediate action to protect their lives and property.

Tornadoes can and occasionally do accompany severe thunderstorms. As a result, the National Weather Service says severe thunderstorm WARNINGS should also be given proper respect.
