Several NW Iowa Schools Awarded Funds Through Pilot Program

June 13, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– The Northwest Iowa Teacher and Paraeducator Registered Apprenticeship pilot program has been awarded a little more than $6.2 million. The Okoboji Community School District is part of that consortium. Superintendent Todd Abrahamson say it’s part of an initiative from Governor Kim Reynolds to help address a shortage of educators in the state…

“MOC Floyd Valley will be the fiscal agent that will distribute the dollars to the other school districts. So it was a huge team effort.”

Abrahamson explains how the funds will be distributed among the schools in the consortium…

“It will depend on how many high school students they will have and then how many paraeductors they have on staff that are interested. For example for Okoboji altogether combined, we have between 14 and 17 high school students and paraeducators, current paraeducators, on the staff, so those are good numbers for us. Some of the districts within the consortium might have less or more, so that’s kind of how the dollars are equalized out. Again, just an exciting opportunity.”

Other member school districts in the consortium are Boyden-Hull, Central Lyon, Emmetsburg, George-Little Rock, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Rock Valley, Sheldon, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Sioux Center, South O’Brien, West Lyon and West Sioux.
