Sensory Room At Clay County Fair To Offer A Number Of Calming Features

September 06, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– As we reported previously, this year’s Clay County Fair powered by SMU will feature a new amenity for those with autism and other conditions who simply need a break while attending the event. Spencer Hospital, the Spencer Hospital Foundation and the Clay County Fair have teamed up to provide a sensory room. It will be located in the Family Place building, or what years ago was the fair’s administrative building. Emily Grange of Spencer Hospital says the room will include a number of comforting features…

“Some of the equipment includes an inside hammock like a swing; a blackout den a child can climb inside of; a crash pad; some activity boards; and little fidget items. There’s a lot of options to help benefit a variety of ages and emotional needs. Spencer Hospital Foundation has enjoyed collaborating on this as we strive to enhance healthcare and wellness in our area.”

Grange says they’ll monitor the usage of the sensory room during this year’s fair and will gather input and additional ideas for it for future years.
