Semi’s Collide On Hwy 18 West Of Spencer

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A collision of two semis early this (Wed.) morning at the intersection of Highway 18 and 130th Avenue west of Spencer sent one of the drivers to the hospital and resulted in the highway in that area being closed for about eight hours.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old David Betz of Rolfe was driving a 1998 Volvo and had stopped on Highway 18 facing east, and was preparing to turn north onto 130th Avenue. As Betz waited for oncoming traffic, authorities say 47-year-old Mark Limkemann of Harper’s Ferry, Iowa, who was driving a 1998 International eastbound, collided with the rear of the semi driven by Betz.

The impact pushed the semi Betz was driving about 265 feet. It then spun 180 degrees and came to rest facing west in the north ditch.

The semi driven by Limkemann came to rest on Highway 18 facing east.

Limkemann was transported to Spencer Hospital with undisclosed injuries; no injuries were reported to Betz.

Damage estimates to the semis weren’t immediately available.

The collision took place around 1:15 this (Wed.) morning.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Everly and Fostoria Fire and Rescue units and the Iowa Department of Transportation motor vehicle enforcement division.

Authorities say charges are pending against Limkemann.
