(Jackson, Mn.)– One person was killed early this (Wednesday) morning when a semi tractor pulling a trailer left the road and crashed on Highway 71 about a mile north of the Iowa/Minnesota border.
The Minnesota State Patrol says the driver, 50-year-old Thomas Gilpin of Knoxville, Iowa, lost control of the rig which left the road, collided with a power pole, went into a field, and tipped onto its left side.
Troopers say 47-year-old Laura Gilpin of Knoxville, Iowa, the driver’s wife who was in the rig’s sleeper, was killed in the crash. Authorities say she was ejected through the left side of the sleeper body.
Thomas Gilpin was taken to Sanford Hospital in Jackson where he was being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
A 1999 Western semi tractor and a 2010 Wilson trailer it was pulling were both totaled.
The Minnesota State Patrol was assisted on the scene by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson Fire Department and ambulance service.
The crash took place around 3:30 a.m.
