(Des Moines)– Atleast 38 Iowa school districts, including several in our area, haven’t hired Registered Nurses as required under a state law.
Graettinger, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Ruthven-Ayrshire, South Clay and Terril are among them.
The districts have sought waivers to delay meeting the 2007 law. Many say they can’t afford to hire Registered Nurses who are specially trained and in big demand by hospitals and clinics.
The state’s registered school nurses are paid an average of more than 35-thousand dollars annually.
Although officials in many small districts note the high cost of hiring nurses, others say nurses are essential because more children are dealing with disabilities, allergies, weight issues and other matters.
Districts must find a solution by next fall because waivers delaying nurse hirings will no longer be available.
