Retiring Spencer Fire Chief Gives His Farewell

May 16, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Retiring Spencer Fire Chief John Conyn gave his farewell at Monday’s Spencer City Council meeting. He had a special message for young people about the value of public service…

“To the children that smile at our school programs as well as other events, may you grow. May you one day be enlightened or ignited to be a firefighter, a police officer, a doctor, a lawyer, an environmentalist. Don’t stop. Be influenced and influence others. Be an influence, be of service.”

Conyn also thanked everyone he’s worked with over the years in the position…

“I’ve had no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a loly one, but we who know the work that a fireman has to do, believe that his is a noble calling. I wish you all well and I thank you.”

A public reception for Conyn was held prior to last (Monday) evening’s city council meeting.
