Researcher Becomes Stranded On An Area Lake

July 12, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Heron Lake, Mn.)- A woman reported becoming stranded in the afternoon last Thursday on Heron Lake near the Jack Creek inlet. A 26 year old female was on the lake in a kayak doing a study on insects for the U of MN when she became stranded on the lake.

When she was finished with her research, she was unable to paddle back, possibly due to dehydration and dizziness which the female complained about during a 911 call. The Heron Lake Fire Department, Heron Lake Ambulance and Lakefield Fire Department all responded. The Heron Lake FD deployed a boat while others searched on foot, which was complicated due to very tall cattails obscuring their view and the expansive area.

The woman heard rescuers nearby and they were able to locate her, and then all of her items were taken back to the Jack Creek boat landing. The female was then transported to the Windom Hospital.
