Request From County For Additional Recycling Roll-Offs At Orleans Gets Cool Reception From City Council

November 15, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Orleans)– A request by county officials for the city of Orleans to put in some additional roll-offs at it’s recycling drop-off site got a cold reception at Monday’s City Council meeting. The city provides the site for Orleans residents. Those living in unincorporated areas can also utilize the site with the county paying a subsidy to the city in exchange. Mayor Bill Maas tells KUOO news city council members have some concerns over what might happen with additional roll-offs being brought in…

“The council was unwilling at this particular point in time to think about putting more recycling bins in there because it might involve two different companies working with recycling within our county and we don’t have any particulars or anything, that doesn’t mean that it’s completely closed off, but it is something that would take a lot of consideration. We have an area that’s fairly large that this could be done but then also right now at the present time the city is unwilling to take the responsibility of keeping the area cleaned up.”

Maas says the city of Orleans simply doesn’t have the manpower to constantly monitor the site. A decline in the number of recycling drop-off sites in recent years has been a source of concern with county officials.
