(Spirit Lake)– A local lawmaker is weighing in on the gay marriage issue and efforts in the Iowa House Thursday to force a vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban it.
Republican State Representative Mike May of Spirit Lake says they attempted to attach the issue to a health and human services funding package because they (Republicans) knew the matter would have to be debated. Instead, the House Majority Leader ruled the procedure was out of order.
May says it wasn’t just republicans that were behind the effort to force a vote. He says a few members of the majority party crossed over party lines in the effort. A procedural effort to force debate was rejected on a 44-54 vote.
