Reckless Driving Complaint Lands Two In Jail On Multiple Charges

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– What started as a reckless driving complaint Sunday evening landed two men in the Emmet county jail on multiple charges.

The Sheriff’s Office says the complaint originated from a call from the Dickinson County Communications Center regarding a reckless driver heading east on Highway 9 toward Emmet county around 8:30 p.m. A few minutes later an Emmet county deputy spotted the suspect vehicle and observed it being driven erratically. The deputy pulled over the vehicle and made contact with the driver, identified as 45-year-old Troy Olson or rural Estherville and a passenger, 47-year-old Michael Olson of rural Dolliver.

Michael Olson got out of the vehicle and was arrested for public intoxication. Authorities say Olson became combative and allegedly injured the arresting officer. At that point Olson was also charged with interference with official acts. He was then placed into a squad car. Olson is accused of kicking out both rear windows of the patrol car while being transported to jail. An additional charge of criminal mischief in the second degree was filed against Olson as a result.

Damage to the squad car was estimated at $4,700.

Authorities say Olson continued to be combative while being booked into jail and had to be tazed, resulting in an additional count of interference with official acts being filed against him, along with 1st degree harassment, and criminal mischief for allegedly damaging a camera, two sets of handcuffs and a portable radio.

The driver, Troy Olson, was also combative and had to be tazed. Authorities say he continued to resist officers, resulting in minor injuries to a deputy. Troy Olson was then booked into the Emmet county jail on charges of 1st offense operating while intoxicated, interference with official acts and improper use of lanes.

Michael Olson was being held on $45,500 cash or surety bond; bond for Troy Olson was set at $8,450 cash or surety.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Estherville Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
