Recent Rain, Warm Weather Giving Crops A Good Boost

June 21, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– When it comes to crop and moisture conditions, most of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota seem to be doing much better than other regions in the upper midwest. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says the warm weather and last weekend’s rains definitely have been beneficial…

“You know we’ve really had some great progress these past two weeks. That corn is in the V-8 to V-9 stage and a lot of it, some of it, is waist high and some is getting close to that, so some really good growth and development. Soybeans are at the probably third trifoliate. I haven’t seen any plants yet that are starting to bloom yet but that’s just right around the corner. Good stands of soybeans and quite a bit of activity there in the field with some spraying yet on the soybeans. It just kind of depends on if you had a pre down or not if you’re just doing the whole post program, but a good wide window of application for soybeans yet, so.”

Nesseth says pests aren’t much of a concern either as of now, at least…

“As of yet, you know, it’s too soon for any aphid pressure yet to be concerned about and as far as any below ground insects it just doesn’t seem to be an issue yet. We might have some cyst nemotode show up yet in the soybean but again it depends on the variety and just what that population is but dryness is a big factor and if we have some above ground symptoms show up it’s cyst nematode but, yeah, it’s there, it’s present and it just kind of depends on the moisture situation and how it affects the soybean yield.”

Nesseth says the additional rain that’s in the forecast for the upcoming weekend would definitely be welcomed.
