Quick Action By Bystanders & A State Trooper Credited For Saving Life Of A RAGBRAI Participant

July 21, 2025

(Orange City)– Quick action by bystanders and the use of an AED by a state trooper are being credited for saving the life of a rider Sunday during the first day of RAGBRAI.

Officials say a man from California had no pulse and bystanders began administering CPR. A trooper who was directing traffic at a nearby intersection had an AED in his squad car and arrived on the scene. A shock was delivered to the patient and a pulse was once again detected. The man was transported by ambulance to the Orange City hospital and was transferred by air to a Sioux City hospital. Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol says the man as of late Sunday afternoon was alert, conscious and receiving medical care.

Dinkla says this is the third RAGBRAI state troopers have carried AED’s in their squad vehicles and that it’s the second life they’ve saved on RAGBRAI with an AED.
