(Rock Rapids)—A Sioux Falls man faces multiple charges after leading officers on a high speed chase that went through portions of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota over the weekend.
The Lyon county Sheriff’s Office says it all started shortly after 2:00 a.m. Sunday when a deputy tried to pull over a vehicle on Highway nine. The driver refused to stop and instead sped up. The pursuit continued eastbound on Highway nine at speeds of between 115 and 117 miles-per-hour. The pursuit then proceeded northbound on Lyon County Road K-40 and went into Rock county, Minnesota. It then continued eastbound on a Rock county road where the driver lost control. The vehicle went into the ditch and came to a rest.
The driver, 18-year-old Benjamin Delfs of Sioux Falls, was arrested and charged with fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, driving while impaired in the 4th degree, open bottle by a driver, reckless driving, no insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle. He was booked into the Rock county jail.
Charges are also pending against Delfs in Iowa.
The vehicle he was driving, a 1989 Honda Civic, sustained an estimated $1,100 in damage.
No injuries were reported.
