Pursuit Puts Heron Lake-Okabena Elementary On Lockdown

September 09, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Heron Lake, Mn.)– A pursuit earlier today (Fri.) that started in Nobles county resulted in the Heron Lake-Okabena Elementary School being put into lockdown for a short time.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says the pursuit started when the Minnesota State Patrol was attempting to pull over a vehicle for speeding on Highway 60. It continued eastbound with the suspect vehicle travelling into the city of Heron Lake, where the driver got out of the vehicle and fled on foot to an apartment building about two blocks away from the school. The school was placed on lockdown while multiple officers searched the area for the driver. The school resource officer was moved from another school in the county to the Heron Lake Elementary school to provide security. The suspect was located and apprehended and the lockdown was lifted after having been in place for about an hour.

A statement from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says there is no longer a public safety threat.

The name of the suspect taken into custody and other details weren’t immediately available. The Sheriff’s Office says additional information will be released at a later time.
