Public Hearing Continues For Proposed Red Rock Wind Energy Project

October 25, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Adjustment Tuesday evening heard comments from those for and against plans for the RedRock wind energy project. The public hearing began Monday. Tuesday night’s session went for nearly five hours.

The company wants to construct up to 89 turbines in Dickinson county. A representative of a group called “Power Up Iowa” spoke in favor of the proposed project…

“This project means more dollars for our schools and our communities. By supporting wind energy, you’re also supporting Dickinson county farmers’ rights and freedom to decide what they do with their land. The renewable energy industry paid landowners $73.4 million in lease payments last year. Farmers work hard. Decisions to harvest traditional crops or natural resources like wind should be left to private property owners.”

Opponents argue the project would harm wildlife and pose health risks and discomfort to those living near the turbines. Another person who spoke last (Tues.) night again called on county officials to implement a moratorium on any new wind turbines…

“The fact that we are considering going forward here, without even additional setbacks or without pumping the brakes on this project and really seriously looking at it, is in my estimation, a little bit of a travesty.”

The hearing resumes at 6:00 pm this (Wed.) evening at the Dickinson County Courthouse.
