Public Health Officials Warn Iowa Is At A High Risk Right Now For West Nile Virus

August 15, 2025

(Des Moines)– State health officials say there’s a high risk of West Nile Virus present throughout Iowa. This comes after the first human case of 2025 was recently confirmed in a man in northeast Iowa.

Researchers at Iowa State University say that recent mosquito surveillance has shown the highest activity for the virus statewide in over 20 years.

Iowans are now advised to take extra precautions to avoid potential mosquito bites by removing standing water from near their home, treating their clothing with insecticide, and wearing longer clothing when outside.
