Proposed Water Quality Rule Change Concerns Coordinator Of Iowa Great Lakes Clean Water Alliance

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Local residents will have an opportunity later this week to sound off over a proposed change for water quality standards being proposed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

John Wills, Coordinator of the Iowa Great Lakes Cleanwater Alliance, tells KUOO news the goal of the proposed rule change is to make it possible to clearly see things about a yard below the surface of lakes that are nine feet or deeper and have a high recreational use.

Wills says he’s concerned about that, saying lakes such as Upper Gar, Lower Gar, Silver Lake and Little Spirit Lake have high levels of recreational use, but would be excluded from the proposed rule change.

The DNR will hear public comments on the proposed rule change this Thursday (January 14th) at 6:00 p.m. in the Waitt Water Quality building at Lakeside Lab on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.

Written comments are being acepted through January 23rd. They should be addressed to Chuck Correll, Iowa Department of Natural Resources; Wallace State Office Building; 502 East 9th Street; Des Moines, Iowa…50319-0034.

Comments may also be submitted via e-mail to chuck.corell@dnr.iowa.gov.
