Proposed Revisions To Dickinson Co. Water Quality Commission 28E Drawing Opposition From City Of Okoboji

August 09, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– Proposed revisions to a 28E agreement for the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission are raising a flag with the city of Okoboji.

The new agreement, if it receives final approval, would increase the amount of funds available for water quality projects from $200,000 a year currently to $250,000, with an additional $50,000 for emergency projects, such as aquatic invasive species. Member entities, namely the cities and Dickinson county, are being asked to kick in more money, with the increases based on the changes in property valuations over the years. For Okoboji, that’s roughly a 50 percent increase in funding the city would need to come up with. It was a topic of discussion at Tuesday evening’s city council meeting. Council member Julie Andres says that funding mechanism is unfair to the city of Okoboji and wants it changed…

John Wills, who works for the commission, said he’ll take the city’s concerns back to commissioners.
