November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A change in funding sources for the resurfacing of Highway 9 from just east of Spirit Lake into Emmet county could put some turning lanes Dickinson county officials want to see installed at three major intersections in jeopardy.

County Engineer Dan Eckert tells KUOO news the Iowa Department of Transportation is looking at using federal funding for the project, and that the feds don’t want that money spent on purchasing right-of-way that would be needed for the turning lanes…Click here to hear mp3 file

Eckert is hopeful the county and the city of Spirit Lake won’t get left holding the bag if it is decided to include the turning lanes. He says there’s still a possibility for state assistance…Click here to hear mp3 file

There’s no word as to what the cost of putting in the turning lanes would be.

Eckert informed the Dickinson county board of supervisors of the matter at their meeting Tuesday. Two of the five supervisors will meet with representatives of the city of Spirit Lake regarding the issue and try to decide where to go from here.

Resurfacing of Highway 9 from just east of Spirit Lake into Emmet county is scheduled for the spring of 2013.
