Progress Continues On A Project In Spencer Separating Sanitary & Storm Sewers

October 02, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Progress continues on a project in Spencer to separate combined storm water and sewer mains. Public Works Director Mark White says of the city’s 1,441 storm water intakes, only 124 are still connected to sanitary sewer lines…

“Part of the town was built years ago where the storm water and the sanitary were in the same pipe and became overloaded during rain events, so.”

White says the city was mandated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency to separate the lines as a result. He says they’re hoping that with the progress that’s been made, Spencer can be removed from the EPA’s watch list…

“I got a call from the DNR last week that we are going to be able to make a request to the EPA to get off their list completely regarding combined sewer overflow. So combined sewer overflow is years ago when the system would become overloaded or filled we would have to pump to the river untreated waste and that is not the case any more with the improvements we’ve made over the last 20 years.”

White says most of the work has been financed through tax dollars and Community Development Block Grants.

The project has been ongoing since about 2008.
