(Spirit Lake)– The presence of prehistoric artifacts lying beneath it has resulted in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources looking at other options when it comes to renovating a parking area at MiniWakan State Park on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake.
Kevin Szcodronski, Chief of the DNR’s State Parks Bureau, tells KUOO news a preliminary survey of the site indicated there are prehistoric artifacts under it, possibly dating all the way back to between 800 BC and 1000 AD…(click here for comment from Szcondronski.)
Szcodronski says the development shouldn’t have an impact on the original timeframe for the project…(click here for comment from Szcodronski.)
The parking lot project was planned in conjunction with the renovation of the historic shelter house and lodge at Mini Wakan State Park.
