(Estherville)– The Estherville Police Department, Avera Holy Family Hospital and the Drug Enforcement Administration are teaming up to give Estherville residents an opportunity to properly dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
Those wishing to take advantage of the program should bring medications to the Avera Holy Family Hospital and Medical Clinic entrance in the north parking lot between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29th.
The program is free and anonymous with no questions being asked.
Officials say it’s increasingly important outdated and unsed prescription drugs be properly disposed of, citing an increase in the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses, as well as abuse of prescription drugs.
In addition, officials say the usual methods of disposing unwanted medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-pose both potential safety and health hazards.
