(Spirit Lake) April 19th is the date for the 15th Annual Get Up and Bowl for Special Olympics and long time volunteer, Nancy Vierkant, says they are looking for corporate sponsors…
“We have a gold level and a silver level corporate sponsors. So we’re looking for those and you’ll probably see our athletes and getting phone calls from volunteers for collecting silent auction items. So both of those are kind of our primary right now as well as of course, everyone can sign up the registrations ready for the bowling teams too.”
Vierkant says the event just keeps growing…
“Fifteen years ago when we started Get Up a bull. Who knew what it was going to grow into. But, you know, now we are up to having four bowling times so people can bowl any time between eleven and six. We have set up times that they can bowl and register for. The bowling times are at eleven twelve forty five, two thirty and four fifteen. So I mean, we can house twelve teams at each one of those bowling times. We have lots of space for people to come and bowl.”
Vierkant says a big part of the day is the Silent Auction…
“I think we’re known for one of the biggest and best silent auctions in the area. It’s where we make a lot of our funds that help promote. So we are year round, right? We’ve got athletes that are practicing, whether it’s summertime, spring time, winter time because of all the different sports that they do. And that’s what Special Olympics provides for our adult team, our team is called Lakes Area Champions. It’s made up of adults within Dickinson County, so we are not just here in Spirit Lake.”
Mindy Wernimont is an athlete with Special Olympics and says she has a lot of support…
“Getting out there in community and just talking to different people, a different area like Spencer. I like talking to them. Everywhere you go, there’s new people you talk to. It’s kind of fun. I like seeing my Aunt Amy. She comes down to Ames. She always makes me happy cheering me on. And everyone else in my family, my friends and family and my teammates, it always makes me happy cheering me on and get going.”
