Prairie Lakes Conference to be held August 11-13

August 08, 2022 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-It’s Clean Water Week in the Iowa Great Lakes, with The Prairie Lakes Conference leading into the Okoboji Blue Water Festival. KUOO”s Becky Thoreson has details:

Clean Water Week will feature numerous water quality events, with The Prairie Lakes Conference and The Okoboji Blue Water Festival both on tap.

Dr. Mary Skopec, Executive Director of Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, says The Prairie Lakes Conference begins on Thursday. “We lead into the Blue Water Festival with a small conference. Thursday morning, we’re going to be at the Francis Sites Wetlands, and then we have just a short afternoon of talks that are really accessible, they’re not heavy science, that you can hear about some of the things that are being done to understand and protect the Lakes. Friday, we’re back outside. So, we’re going to go back to Angler’s Bay on Big Spirit Lake, with either a kayak or a walking option, to hear about the project the DNR has to bring back the Oak Savannah in Angler’s Bay, and then a walking tour of the storm water practices that have been installed in the Park area, and then we finish the conference with a tour on the Queen.”

She adds that registration is available online. “Go to the website, it’s just plciowa.com, and there’s a link to the agenda and the locations and the registration. The registration is what we call a la carte, so some of the field tours are free, some of things that require lunch and like, the Queen tour, have a little fee associated with them.”
