Pothole Season Arrives

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– With spring now just days away comes another season–pothole season.

County, state and city road crews say this could be a banner year for potholes thanks to the conditions we had this winter.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation say potholes are the result of moisture getting into or underneath pavement. In the spring, freezing and thawing of that moisture causes the pavement to shift, buckle or fracture. Vehicles traveling over the weakened areas dislodge the pavement material, resulting in the dreaded pothole.

Crews are using a temporary cold-mix to fill potholes until warmer, dryer weather allows for permanent repairs.
