Possible suicide attempt by Sioux Rapids woman damages bridge

November 22, 2014

Spencer –

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department says an apparent suicide attempt resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to a bridge, and may result in charges for a Sioux Rapids woman.

Authorities say officers responded to 50 year old Lori Heying’s residence in Sioux Rapids following a complaint of a possible suicidal subject just before 10 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Upon arrival, it was found Heying was not at the residence.  Deputies were informed by her ex-boyfriend that Heying was last seen in the 4600 mile of 240th Avenue when he lost cell phone contact with her.

Heying was driving a black 2003 Ford Explorer which was owned by Michael Cowell at the time.

Deputies located Heying seat-belted in the car, which had crashed and was lying on the passenger side facing northeast.  Emergency crews cut Heying from the vehicle, and she was transported to the Spencer Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies say the vehicle was traveling south in the 4600 Mile of 240th Avenue east of Highway 71 past Greenville, when Heying apparently struck the east side of a bridge on purpose.

Damages to the vehicle were estimated at $7500, with damage to the bridge around $35,000.  The bridge is currently closed and the accident is currently under investigation, with OWI charges pending blood test results.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Webb Fire and Rescue, Clay County Engineers Office and the Spencer Hospital during the incident.
