Poor Air Quality Could Impact Parts Of The Region Today (Thursday)

August 17, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– Air quality could again be an issue in portions of the region today (Thurs.). An air quality alert is in effect for all of southwest Minnesota until 11:00 pm Friday. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says smoke from wildfires in the Northwest Territories of Canada is making its way south across the state, with heavy levels of it making its way to the ground. The agency says sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease, heart disease, children and older adults should limit prolonged or heavy exposure.

The MPCA says the smoke should disperse Friday as a strong southerly wind will blow it back north.

Otherwise the big story in the weather will be an extensive heatwave that will start Saturday. 90 degree plus temperatures will be in the forecast all the way through at least Wednesday of next week, with no chances for rain.
