Plans To Extend Trail On N.E. Side Of Big Spirit Are Progressing

March 10, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning approved a resolution allowing the Trails Board to seek a grant on the project. It would extend the trail from where it currently leaves off north of Jones Pasture north through the Angler’s Bay area on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails told the supervisors the project has been on the drawing board about 20 years now…

“If you recall back in 2006 when several donors and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation saved the Yarns Wildlife Management Area from development, and we did get the Jones Pasture Trail completed back in 2020. Obviously our focus has been a lot on getting connected to Lake Park and with Clay county, but this has been sitting in the wings for quite some time, obviously. We think it’s time to start going after some funding for it, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation also has $112,000 set aside for continued improvements on the property, so we’ll tap into that. We’re looking at $450,000 for this grant.”

Reed says the trail extension would be concrete and not asphalt. She says while concrete initially costs more upfront but it doesn’t require as much ongoing maintenance as asphalt does.
