Plans For Osceola County Jail Project Being Re-Visited After Costs Come In Higher Than Expected

January 09, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Sibley)– A project to renovate and add on to the Osceola County Jail is being scaled back after costs came in higher than expected. Voters approved a $5 million bond issue for the project back in 2023. But Sheriff Kevin Wollmuth says the cost came in about $2 million over what they had planned for. He says that’s forced them to make some changes…

“We’re just trying to eliminate anything that we can eliminate that’s actually not needed. There were some things in there that the bidders put in that we don’t actually need and so we’ve started to eliminate some of those items.”

Wollmuth says there is a fine line, though…

“We don’t want to go cheap because we’ve got to meet the state recommendations when we build this thing.”

Initial plans were to tear down the 1907 building and put a driveway for the courthouse there. But Wollmuth says that may have to wait now, due to lack of funds.

The project would put the entire jail on ground level. It would also include additional office space and storage. He says they still hope to start construction as early as this March, and have the project complete by the second or third quarter of 2026.
