Pioneer Days To Proceed–Without Beer Garden

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– This weekend’s Pioneer Days celebration in Milford will go on, but organizers say one of the more popular attractions, the beer garden, will be scrapped following Monday evening’s Milford city council meeting.

Representatives of the Milford Commercial Club, which puts on Pioneer Days, requested the city waive a requirement for the organization to sign a lease agreement for a portion of Florence Park where the beer garden was to be located. In the past, a bar has taken on that responsibility. But Commercial Club representatives told the council they couldn’t find a bar that was willing to do that this year.

Dawn Powell, the club’s President, said they were unwilling to sign onto the lease, citing concern over liability, saying they couldn’t understand the reason for it as they already have the proper insurance in place…(click here for comment from Powell.)

But City Attorney David Stein, Jr. said the city in the past has always required the lease agreement for the beer garden as a way to protect itself…(click here for comment from Stein.)

Following some further discussion, the council voted three-to-two to require the lease agreement. Council members Don Oleson and Chris Hinshaw cast the no votes.
