Pet Experts urge Public to Not Disturb Baby Cats during Kitten Season

April 15, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Estherville)-Pet experts are urging the public to not disturb baby cats during the Kitten Season. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Local Animal Shelters are asking the public to not “kit-nap” kittens during the spring season.
Emmet County Animal Shelter Director Kristy Henning explains. “Basically what kit-napping is, is taking a healthy kitten or healthy litter of kittens that you find and trying to get them into a shelter or rescue when really, their best chance at survival is to stay with Mom. One of the things people assume is when they see a solo kitten someplace, is that it’s been abandoned. That’s not necessarily the case. Mom cats have to transport their kittens around if they have to move from one location to another, but they can’t carry them all at one time like a mama possum can.”
She says there are some exceptions. “Now, if they’re sick, thin, if they’re crying , if they’re dirty if they’re wet, any of those things are happening, that’s when we need to step in and that’s when you guys can reach out and we’ll see the best way to help.”
